I've been looking for some time now, and have been unable to find the command to switch the login window on OSX from "List of Users" and "Name and Password".

After Google-ing "login window preferences" I came accross this file.

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

doing a read on that

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

{ AccountInfo = { AllLogins = { martinb = 1; }; MaximumUsers = 1; OnConsole = { martinb = 1; }; }; AdminHostInfo = HostName; GuestEnabled = 1; HiddenUsersList = ( "_conveyor" ); MCXLaunchAfterUserLogin = 1; MCXLaunchOnUserLogout = { martinb = 1; }; OptimizerLastRunForBuild = 29560103; OptimizerLastRunForSystem = 168428288; SHOWFULLNAME = 1; lastLoginPanic = "450973063.842659"; lastUser = loggedIn; lastUserName = martinb; }

The option, "SHOWFULLNAME" is the option that corrisponds to the login window display. Setting it to 1 (true) toggles "Name and Password", setting it to 0 (false) toggles "List of Users".

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist SHOWFULLNAME -bool false

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist SHOWFULLNAME -bool true
