Office 2010 ending support January 2016

Will likley see one or two service packs, after the second service pack will go into a support hiatice while Microsoft works on the next version.

A complete overhaul, re-written in xCode. For the end user, it will look like a facelift, for the admin it is completly different.

Step 1: Remove Office 2011

Have to use a script.

However, Office 2011 and Office 2016 can be installed side-by-side. Largespread usage like this is a bad idea, but for some might be a life saver. (For people who need 2016, but also need 2011 for older features)

Step 2: Install Office 2016

Copy the pkg installer somewhere on the HD, /tmp is a good place.

Either double click the pkg, or run the script below.

sudo /usr/sbin/installer -pkg /private/tmp/OfficePreview.pkg -target /  

Outlook can be exluded by changing a plist by adding a -applyChoiceChangesXML flag to the install script.
This might get hairy as the gui does not offer these settings.

Setp 3: Updates to Office 2016

Combo updaters likley won't change. Come as a .pkg and contain multiple updates in one package. As the product lifespan moves forward, there might be multiple updates required to install.


The size of the Office disk usage has grown exponentially.

Office 2011 = 1.69 Gb
Office 2016 = 6.39 Gb *

Office 2011 was contained in a single folder in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011 with a nested folder called "Office". This Office folder contained shared resources for all Office applications. This folder was about 1Gb.

Now with 2016 this Office folder is bundled in each Office application. Adding ~1Gb to each Office application. This offers several advantages, as the Microsoft Office apps are self contained and far more portable. Office 2016 is poised for the Mac App Store. This also helps CS6 because the Microsoft Fonts are no longer system wide.

Office 2011 and prior were shipped as individual packages for each language. Office 2016 is localized with 1 package for every language, and changes dynamically with the OS.

Office 2011 has over 810 package receipts. Office 2016 only stores the applications you see as package receipts. This is useful for tools like Munki that request installed applications with these receipts.


Outlook is now sandboxed. Office 2011 kept preferences in the ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Now in 2016 the data is stored in ~/Library/Containers/***
Data now stored in SQLLite, time machine friendly, no more database utility, no more database daemon.

Modifying POP and IMAP settings in /Applications/Microsoft insert organization's email settings.

A script can be found to setup Autodiscover and Outlook Exchange setup.


New preferences, not in plists anymore, but in SQLLite...
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/MicrosoftRegistrationDB.reg This rendered Office preferences unmanageable.

Group containers are for applications that need to work together. This allows Word, Excell, Outlook, and Powerpoint to share the same preferences database.

This is limited to the Office applications. Preferences for AutoUpdater has remained the same as 2011.

Shared Files

Can add company templates to office products, accessable from Word and through the preferences database.

Scripting and Automation

Microsoft is no longer prodiving Automator and AppleScript actions for Office ):
Since the Office applications are sandboxed, it may be hard to script content communication between each application.
